Part I

Adam & Eve In the Garden

Adam tossed his sling and arrows near the mouth of their cave and picked up his pipe and stood near the entrance to their little cave, that had been situated on the edge of the .   He felt good that morning.  His Father had requested to speak with him  about mankind and he was anxious to find out what would be his and Eve’s role in this divine creation. There was a gleam of light from daybreak that shrouded the cave and the sound of lions in the distance signaled a new day was dawning.  Adam gazed at the bright day with ease as he lit his pipe.

He had just blown out the flame of fire and taken a tote of his pipe, when Eve turned over on their cot. She opened her eyes and gazed at him with love.

“Going to hunt with Father this morning?” she asked, a question lingered in her eyes,  but it disappeared when she smiled.

“He'll be down this morning, will meet me in the woods,” Adam returned as he puffed on his pipe with cool. Adam loved spending time chasing rabbits and hunting boar, he'd catch his kill come home and cook outside on a fire. It was extra special when his Father stepped down from his throne. While the meat roasted he fed Adam nuggets of wisdom in him riddles and rhymes. The Father spent plenty time with Adam in the woods, this gave Eve the opportunity to fiddle about the massive fields and gardens that belonged to them.

“I left water on the fire and put some figs on the grate for you to enjoy while I’m gone.  I’ll catch a calf and bring home a brisket for supper” he said and he handed Eve the pipe to smoke.  Adam was big and husky, had a dark square face and big round eyes, he threw them towards his wife.  Eve was as beautiful as a ray of sunlight, her chocolate skin beamed beneath the glow that intruded their quite cave.

“Lovely,” Eve returned.  “I think I shall take a walk and bathe in the pond today.”

“That sounds enticing,” Adam said.  He gleamed at his wife, “we shouldn’t be away too long, my love.  Father wants to discuss mankind.”

“Mankind—there’s only two that I see.  Me and you.” Eve grunted and she took the pipe and sat up.

Adam tugged on her arms.  “You do know we’ll be the King and Queen over all humanity, men and women alike.”

Adam sounded hopeful. His dark eyes danced with excitement when he said the words.  They had lived in the Garden since they were old enough to remember and their Father always promised they would reign over many.

Eve looked up towards her husband, she wanted to believe the words. She wondered about humanity or mankind and where they dwelt.   She had yet to tell Adam she'd befriended Sampson Slithers, a creature that crawled on his belly.  Sampson told her if they stayed behind the Gates of the Garden, they would never know anything about mankind. He had revealed to her the only way to escape the gate, was to enjoy a piece of forbidden fruit.

Both Adam and Eve had specific instructions from their Father never to eat the bright red apples from the tree that grew near the Garden Gates. He warned them about conversing with the creatures that slithered on the ground.  Sampson Slithers wasn’t like the other critters.  He was handsome. He had an ebony black-back, with skin highlighted in gold and silver, his red pupils glowed like rubies and his white fanged teeth like pearls.  He was kind and sang with the voice of an angel.  Eve could tell by his slow, funny drawl that he knew a great deal about life beyond the Garden Gates.  Besides that he was unlike the other creatures. He didn't always crawl on his belly. He had the ability to transform into a man just like Adam.  He stood upright and talked and walked about the grounds. Eve could find no good reason not to speak with Sampson, but she kept him secret.

“Do you think this mankind Father speaks about is beyond the gates?”  Eve questioned.

Adam made a confused face and let out a whiff of smoke, “beyond the gates there’s only darkness and chaos, life doesn’t exist out there,” he returned with a raised brow.

“Darkness and chaos—those are Father’s words, but what does that mean?”

Adam gazed at his bride with wonder, he had in fact thought about the gates many times.  He never told Eve.  Never wanted her to question why they were there, what they were being protected from, “we don’t need to know those things, we should just trust when the time comes he’ll reveal all tings.”

“When the time comes, we’ve been here since children.”

“I personally believe, he’s going to create humanity the same way he created me and you,” Adam said. He took the pipe from Eve and smoked as he gazed outside at the maze of green wattle bushes.  “The same way he created the animals we see in the hills grazing the landscape, or the birds and the trees and every other creature that inhabits this place.”

“Even those creatures that slither on the ground?” Eve asked.  She was thinking about Sampson Slithers at that moment. She sat up and allowed Adam to take her hand and rub her breast.

“Yes, even those disgusting creatures that slither on the ground.  He created those too.”

“You know they can speak just like me and you.”

“They can speak, Eve?” Adam questioned, he raised his brow and laughed.  “The things you come up with.  I’m going to stop leaving you alone for so long, your mind plays too many tricks on you.” He said and he cuddled her in his big arms and held her close to his chest.

Eve blinked her eyes and whispered into his ear, “Adam, some of them do speak.”

Adam had never seen an animal speak. His Father had always assured him that no other creature possessed the same capabilities as they had.  No other animal had the ability to speak, to talk, or think.  “I’m sure you’re mistaken, but that doesn’t matter, we still will have dominion over every creature.”

“Well I will be delighted to see the day you become Ruler over all mankind.”

Adam kissed his bride’s forehead, , “you will be Queen,” he said. "So as your King, please refrain from holding any conversations with creatures or critters or fowl,” Adam said in a mocking tone.  “The thought makes my eyes turn green.”

“Green eyes,” Eve said.  “Dear your eyes are as dark as ebony.”

Adam laughed from his belly, and this made Eve laugh.

“I mean it makes me jealous to know another creature is trying to occupy some of your time.”

“Oh, I see, you don’t like that.”

“Not at all,” he said.  “Suppose I told you a bunch of Mourning Doves cooed at me whenever I go hunting. How would you feel?”

Eve thought for a moment.  She rolled her big eyes, and she brushed her thick, black mane of hair off her face with her fingers, “I should use your bow and arrow and shoot every Mourning Dove that tried.”

With this Adam wailed out another laugh and kissed Eve with deep compassion, “Let me go get our dinner, so we won’t starve before we have a any chance to rule,” Adam said.

Eve got up and walked Adam to the mouth of the cave.  Together they stepped outside and admired the way the warm sun lighted the garden.

“I’m going to make a pie tonight,” Eve said with wide eyes.

“My favorite. A sweet pie made by my sweet lady,” Adam said.

“I wish I could use those big, red applies to make a pie.”

Adam looked at his wife with narrowed eyes, “No apples--you know they're forbidden,” he said with a firm look on his face.

“Why no apples?” she asked.

Adam shrugged his shoulders, “you know why.”

“You should ask Father if he would mind if we plucked a few, just one or two.  I know an apple pie would be delicious.”  She threw pleading eyes at Adam that aroused him, made him feel warm inside.

“I’ll ask,” he said and with those words he departed down the lane, pass the mazes of whittle and rose bushes and disappeared into the thicket where the wild beasts roamed.
